Sanctuary (1986

In 1962 Stan created a series of large wood-carved murals for Manuche's Restaurant in New York City — depicting the 1958 NFL Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants, often called "the greatest game ever played." Twenty years later he returned — this time to sketch the people around the bar. No plan, just observation. What emerged was an atmosphere where time seemed suspended — a bar that felt, for some, like a sanctuary. Twelve etchings followed, then an artist's book with its own sense of flow, rhythm, and meaning.
